On the Drug Prevention
Front Lines

All Scientologists are drug-free. One hundred percent of Scientologists say they take no street drugs at all. This statistic is even more dramatic when compared to the 1990 US government figures showing that over 50 percent of those between the ages of 18 to 25 use drugs.

In the community, the staggering problems of drugs are addressed by the Church and its parishioners through numerous grass-roots anti-drug efforts. Emphasis is put on education and drug-abuse prevention. Through these efforts, children around the world have pledged to be drug-free and communities have united in activities to rid their areas of illicit drug use and promote drug-free living.

"HOWDY MARSHALS"

The Atlanta Journal, on July 6, 1995, reported on more than 225 city children being "sworn-in" as Drug-Free Marshals, a campaign sponsored by the Church of Scientology to protect children from becoming involved in drugs. To become Drug-Free Marshals, children participate in anti-drug activities, such as skits, anti-drug songs, as well as art and essay contests. They also take a pledge to be drug-free and to help their family and friends to do the same.

"These children can see that there is a serious problem and they want to do something about it," Diane Stein, the local coordinator of the program, told the Atlanta Journal.

"UNIQUE MOTHER’S DAY GIFT BY YOUNG DRUG-FREE MARSHALS"

The San Francisco Post, the Washington Citizen, and several other papers around the United States reported on a special 1995 Mother’s Day surprise. New Drug-Free Marshals from around the country presented their mothers with a card attached to a rose containing the following promise:

"This Mother’s Day, you are getting two gifts from me. The first is this lovely flower and the second is my solemn pledge to live a life free of drugs. Today I became a Drug-Free Marshal which means I promise to be drug-free and to help make my community drug-free too."

"SAY NO TO DRUGS: A FOOTBALL MATCH TO SUPPORT A PREVENTION CAMPAIGN"

The Italian Sprint and Sport reported in March 1995 on a soccer game in support of drug-free living, between the Church of Scientology "Say No to Drugs" team and the Torino Calcio women’s team:

"Many atheletes and sports teams are supporting the ’Say No To Drugs’ campaign, including marathon champions Given d’Auria and Walter Durbano, [and] the Torino Dragons hockey team ... to pledge their solidarity and desire for a better society free from drugs."

"SAY NO TO DRUGS, YES TO LIFE FROM THE EIFFEL TOWER TO THE GISORS MARKET"

The French paper L’Impartial reported August 10, 1995:

"The members of the Church of Scientology continue their awareness campaign about the damaging effects of drugs.... Their ’drug-free pledge’ is meeting again with great success."
