STATEMENT FROM THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY CONCERNING THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT’S POSITION ON SCIENTOLOGY

The statement issued by the German government concerning the Church of Scientology not only contains documented lies, it is proof of the Government’s inability to deny evidence of systematic human rights violations leveled by the State Department, United Nations, other minority religions that are targets of discrimination and concerned human rights advocates and groups around the world.

The German government has tried to deflect attention from its deplorable human rights record by resorting to empty rhetoric, unfounded allegations, weak denials and outright lies. They bluntly deny the existence of discrimination against artists who are Scientologists. Can they seriously believe that people have forgotten that less than six months ago, members of the Christian Democratic Union tried to boycott movies featuring world-famous actors, Tom Cruise and John Travolta, because they are Scientologists?

As an editorial in last week’s Time magazine commented, the German government’s reaction to Scientology “ranges somewhere between silly and hysterical.”

Their latest ploy is to accuse the Church of being like the Nazis. Yet, Nazi history doesn’t tell of a small religion taking over the German government. It tells of arrogant, intolerant government officials trying to destroy minority religions. The comparisons that are drawn to the marginalizing of the Jewish minority in the 1930s in Germany are based on historical facts. Nobody has made the comparison to death camps or the Holocaust, far from it. The effort is to prevent further escalation of discrimination by making known to the world what the German government is trying so hard to sweep under the rug.
