Scientology in the News: Headlines

Worldwide Community
Service

From Scientology’s inception, L. Ron Hubbard predicted that the religion would only go so far as it works. The Church’s first 42 years have proven him right and shown that Scientology works, both for the individual and through practical application in society. Thus every day members of the Church are hard at work to remedy society’s ills and make this world a better place to live for themselves and for others. Churches of Scientology are known in their communities for their charity work.

"CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY DRUMS IN THE GLOBAL VILLAGE"

The  Los Angeles Bay News Observer reported June 8, 1995, on the Foster Parents Association of Los Angeles presenting Tom Smith, Community Outreach Director for the Church of Scientology, with an award for outstanding community service:

"The Church of Scientology has contributed over 50,000 man hours of volunteer work in the Los Angeles area. One of the brightest and most enduring examples are the 57 murals that professional artists from the church have completed in county facilities throughout Los Angeles."

"IT HEALS TROUBLED HEARTS CAUSED BY THE EARTHQUAKE"

The  Japan Times,  Kobe Shinbun,  Mainichi Shinbun ,  Yomouri Shimbun and Syukyo Shimbun reported on relief efforts of Scientologists after the devastating January 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake in Kobe, Japan.

As reported in the  Syukyo Shimbun:

"Members of this newly-risen religion, founded by L. Ron Hubbard in 1953, organized a party of members to heal people troubled with physical injuries, traveling from refuge to refuge.

"In order to recover from such physical illness, Scientologists use a method that they term assists . Chika Sakimoto says that the assist helps the body to recover from illnesses it suffers, releasing people from the terrible memory of the past and enabling them to confront the future."

"NATIONWIDE HELP COMES TO OKC"

In April 1995, 200 Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology traveled from around the nation to Oklahoma City to minister to victims of the tragic bombing of a federal office building. The group responded to a call from the President of the Church of Scientology International to assist relief efforts in Oklahoma, which was reported in the  Los Angeles Times, Oklahoma’s  Daily O’Collegian and others.

Oklahoma City’s WDAF TV reported April 23, 1995:

REMOTE NEWSMAN: "One thing that’s interesting is that here in Oklahoma, a lot of people are coming to Oklahoma City for more than just prayer, more than just to pray. Volunteers are coming from all over the place. We talked to a girl from Kansas City, a young woman who came down here just to spend the weekend on her own time. She’s a church volunteer and she just felt she had to help out. She’s done everything from help sweep the streets to help counsel relief workers.

SCIENTOLOGY VOLUNTEER: "I think it’s all a little unreal to people and we’ve been trying to make it more real. We as Scientologists try to help the environment and just take responsibility for what’s going on."

"RENOVATION UNDOES SINS OF THE ’60s"

In 1995 the Church of Scientology completed restoration of a 1918 historical landmark in Clearwater, Florida. The  St. Petersburg Times reported September 20, 1995 that the-then ongoing work would rectify attempts by a previous owner in 1960 to modernize the Clearwater Bank Building:

"Mike Sanders, a local historian, said it appeared the church was willing to spend a significant amount of money to undo the `insensitive’ changes wrought by the bank. `I think some integrity went into the building,’ he said."

"AROUND OUR COMMUNITY"

Media throughout the nation’s capital reported the October 1995 grand opening of the new National Church of Scientology. Washington, D.C.’s ABC affiliate,  WJLA TV, aired the following news segment:

"Washington’s Church of Scientology has a new look, Restoration of their 17th century mansion is complete....

"[Scientology], founded by L. Ron Hubbard is used for the scientific study of religion, the universe and human behavior. Just last week, church member and actor John Travolta took part in a ribbon-cutting of the newly restored facility. The mansion was originally built for George S. Fraser back in 1890."
